Summary:This is a story about a hero named Squanto, a Pawtuxet man, once kidnapped by European traders, who taught him English.  His sharing of what he and his fellow Native people knew so well, the ways of the land, of the animals, of the earth.  This is what saved the Pilgrims from starvation.  How the lives of Squanto and the Pilgrims came together in this story.  The reason that the Pilgrims survived after they got off the Mayflower is because of the humanity and compassion of the Native people.  This book explains what happened on the first thanksgiving with detail and pictures that make you think that you are there.
Extension Activities:
Have stations set up around the room for different Thanksgiving activities.
1. Make Indian place mats.  By using construction paper and markers the children can make place mats that have Indian designs such as zigzags, crosses and circles.
2. Thanksgiving Sports Match.  This game is played by having smooth stones numbered from 1 to 5 depending on the number of players.  Have a circle drawn on the floor or by a string.  Take turns tossing the stones into the circle.  Try to knock other player's stones out and the person with the most stones at the end wins.
3. Leaf-Rubbing Cards.  Take leaves and sandwich them in between a sheet of paper.  Use a crayon to get the imprint of the leaf.  Have the children decorate them and then they pass them out.
4. Birch-Bark Eagle.  Use a ruler to draw short lines on construction paper to look like birch.  Then cut out a shape like an eagle, oak blossom, turtle, canoe, man, woman, leaf or an ear of corn.
