Summary: This counting story is about a hungry snake and ten mice. One day the mice were playing in a meadow, but they wre careful to watch for snakes. But when the mice got tired they forgot all about the snakes. While the mice took naps a hungry snake went out to find dinner. The snake found an empty jar and went looking for mice. He found three mice and decided that he ws going to count them. He found ten mice total. When they were all in the jar he was about to eat the mice when they said there is still room in the jar and there was a big mouse over there. The mouse then tipped over the jar and ran away, and when the snake comes back there are no mice to be found.
Extension Activity: For this extension activity, I would provide the students with jars and then have them cut out their own animals from paper and put them in the jar. They would cut out as many as they could count!
